Heather Jones was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1941 and started painting at the age of 10 under the tutelage of her father Norman McGow. The latter was an art teacher and a keen water-colour artist. Norm and Heather spent much quality time together in those early years fostering a close relationship between father and daughter. These trips often comprised visits to the country, ocean and bush. There they would both set up and paint what they saw or the mind’s image and it was apparent at an early stage that Heather was moving in a different direction from her father. Heather’s work moved toward a preference for oil painting and mixed media using her own very individual style and colouring. A love of abstraction in scale, perspective and colour is a hallmark in all her work.
Heather received a Diploma in Art Studies at TAFE and later in 1996, combining the jobs of mother of 3 university students, running her home and following her career, she also gained a Bachelor of Arts Degree, majoring in Fine Art & English at the University of Western Australia. Heather also lectured in watercolour painting, printmaking and design at Carine College of TAFE.
Her work includes painting in most media, printmaking, jewellery design and manufacture, and textile and fabric design. Colour and the subtle effects and textures obtained by overlaying transparent papers and printing inks has been an area of special interest. Allied to this is the challenge of melding the colour, texture, and form between the disciplines of painting, printmaking, jewellery and textiles. 15 solo exhibitions at leading galleries, many awards and the keen collecting of Heather’s work demonstrate the breadth of talent she has for design, colour and form.
